[MOVIES] Movies of the week 05

This week I'm really really late for this, no excuses, I'm just late. But again, more movies with a small summary and some of my personal opinion.

Tales from the crypt (1972)

A group of people end up together inside a crypt where they find a man that starts talking about their past and what brought them there.

Good movie, I think it's interesting to watch, not scary at all but it looks like it has a moral, something like 'Those that live by the sword die by the sword'. I like the fact that they're short stories but all of them have more or less the same structure.

Paranoiac (1963)

After a few years of the dead of their parents and the suicide of one of the sons, a family, under the care of the aunt, comes together to talk about the heritage but a they are surprised when they find out the brother they thought was dead comes back.

[SPOILER] I liked the movie, I think the plot is good although it was a bit weird when the sister kisses the guy that she thinks is her brother, (this is not Star Wars!) but besides that it has a twist, I'm always in for a good twist, for a movie from the 60s I'm sure it was very surprising back then.

The hidden (1987)

An extraterrestrial being comes to the earth and starts killing humans and inhabiting their bodies, another extraterrestrial is in charge of finding and stoping him. He will impersonate an FBI agent and with the help of a human cop he will try to capture him before it's too late.

This is a mix of 'Invasion of the body snatchers' and 'Fallen', it's the typical police movie but plus extraterrestrials. I'm not sure about the ending of the movie, there are two possibilities and I can't decide which one is the one that really happened.

Time bandits (1981)

A group of strange man appear in the room of a kid that loves history. While they're running away they will travel through time to steal some valuable things from important people from history.

This is a funny movie, full of fantasy, history, time travel, action, I think it has a good mix of things, a movie that you should watch if you have kids. Everything related to The Monty Python must be watched at least once.

Henry: Portrait of a serial killer (1986)

A movie based on the life of the serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.

I didn't like this one that much, I found it a bit boring, too much sex but of course, an 80s movie, I know it's depicting the life of a serial killer and still, I think the other guy is even worse than the main character. You won't miss anything if you don't watch this movie unless you're fan of Michael Rooker.

9 (2009)

In a post apocalyptic world 9 wakes up alone, but soon he finds other beings that are like him. They are hiding from some killing machines and 9 wakes up the biggest one. They will have to save 2 and others from the machines and discover what's behind their creations.

I'm missing something at the beginning of this movie, I'm not talking about the explanation that happens later on the movie but probably more about the first interaction between 9 and 2. I think at that point everything happens too fast. Besides that, I think it's a cute movie, I love the whole post apocalyptic, steampunk vibe of the movie, the soul thing doesn't make sense but it's a fantasy movie so let's forget about reality.

Ichi the killer (2001)

The boss of a yakuza clan is killed and one of his men, Kakihara, a masochist, is decided to find the assassin and take revenge. Ichi, the one who killed Kakihara's boss, that is manipulated by another man to commit those crimes, will start to kill the whole clan until he has to face Kakihara.

Since this movie came out and I saw the poster I thought Ichi was the blonde guy there, guess what? He's not. Why don't you guys put the pic of Ichi? I've been wrong all this time! Anyway, it's an interesting movie, I must day that if you're apprehensive don't watch it, as a lot of Japanese movies of the same genre, this one has lots of blood and a lot of mutilation, it's based on a manga which is probably even more hardcore.  Otherwise, if you don't mind that a lot, watch it.

El pregón (2016)

Two unsuccessful music stars from the 80s are contracted by the mayor of his town to do the 'pregón' of the town's festivities but it doesn't go as well as they planned.

I wasn't sure if this was going to be a good movie or just a wannabe, but I went to the cinema with my dad again to watch it. It's a Spanish movie with two of my favorite comics (actually three) so I had to watch it. It's very funny, the 80s visuals are really cool and it also have a soft side, but the best is all the times that make you laugh. If you are Spanish and you like the actors I recommend this one.

The private life of Sherlock Holmes (1970)

A woman is found drowning in the river and is brought to Sherlock. With Watson's help, they will have to help her to find her husband, an engineer that went missing.

In general I love Billy Wilder's movies and this one is not different. The whole atmosphere he creates is really nice and that's what I really like. The plot is probably not extremely creative but it doesn't matter, it's a movie that shows clearly Sherlock Holmes' flaws and virtues and depicts them properly. Also, I love Sherlock Holmes since I was a kid so, yes, love it.

Near dark (1987)

A guy meets a nice girl that turns out to be a vampire and bites him. Her gang kidnaps him and made him be part of the clan unless he wants to be killed. He accepts but his family is looking for him and the clan doesn't like that.

Another late 80s vampire movie, not very creative, nothing too special about it, only the 'cure' part of it and I almost find it offensive, although 'Daybreakers' also has that same thing but I think they deal with it better, maybe not and I just have a soft spot for Ethan Hawke, I do. I don't think it's a bad movie, though, it's just another one of those movies, not bad, if you're bored you can watch it but it's not going to make your brain work.

The black room (1935)

Two twins are born and a prophecy says that the younger brother would kill the older one inside the black room. The noble family disregards the prophecy, but when both brothers become adults the older brother is still scared of the dark room and decides to take matters into his hands.

I think everything Boris Karloff did must be watch, at least I'm trying to do it. It's an old but good movie, I wasn't expecting that ending, I'm not going to do any spoilers on this one, but I thought something else was going to happen. I think it's a good ending as the whole movie.

The illusionist (2006)

A young boy falls in love with a noble girl but they grew apart. He becomes a famous magician and meet her again, while she is the fiancée of the Prince Leopold. On one of the shows he is arrested by the police chief that explains to the Prince the story of the magician.

Even though I'm not into romantic movies and the plot of this one is about love and magic, it still has magic and of course Edward Norton, therefore I like it. I think the whole story is well constructed and at the end it makes you doubt if the bad guy was really as bad as you thought he was.

Sucker Punch (2011)

A girl tries to save his little sister from his stepfather but kills her by accident and she's sent to a mental institution where the father wants to lobotomize her. When she is inside she creates another reality to help her cope with the situation.

This is a confusing movie, you don't really know what reality you're in until the end of the movie and even then it's not that clear. I think the photography of this movie is amazing, the whole fantastic/steampunk realities are the best part. It's different and very creative, the aesthetic is great, I like it.

Although I really liked 'El pregón' because it's very funny I would have to chose Billy Wilder's The private life of Sherlock Holmes, it's pretty easy to know why, I love Sherlock and also Billy Wilders, it's a nice movie, love the aesthetic and the mood of it, it also has London, and I love London.
