Hey there! A couple of days ago I started this book (that I bought in 2014 in London but I have too many books and yeah...) and I finished it yesterday morning. I thought it was time to be serious about the reading because I can't buy new books until at least I finish a few of the ones I have. I have a random list of 25 and I picked one of them, I will do another random list of 25 once I'm done with all those books. But I'm going to stop talking about that shit and go to the book.
Hey there! Hace un par de días empecé este libro (que compré en 2014 en Londres, pero tengo demasiados libros y eso... ) y lo terminé ayer por la mañana. Pensé que era hora de tomarme en serio esto la lectura porque no puedo comprar más libros al menos hasta que termine algunos de los que tengo (que son demasiados). Tengo una lista aleatoria de 25 y elegí uno de ellos, haré otra lista random de 25, una vez que he terminado con todas las personas. Pero voy a dejar de hablar de mis tonterías y voy al libro.
The Axeman's Jazz, the first book by Ray Celestin, is based on the crimes that happened in New Orleans from 1918 to 1919.
If you don't know anything about the Axeman you don't have to worry, it's not necessary to know about it because the book basically uses the premise of the crimes to create a fictional story around it.
The story focuses on three/four main characters, a detective from the New Orleans Police (Det. Lieutenant Michael Talbot), an ex detective just released from prison (Luca d'Andrea) and a young lady working for a detective agency (Ida Davis) with the help of her best friend (Lewis Armstrong, yes, that Lewis Armstrong).
The three main characters try;by their own means and for their own reasons; to solve the Axeman's crimes. Their storylines only intertwine a couple of times, some times mere anecdotes, but through all three of them we manage to understand the complicated plot that is behind the crimes.
I strongly recommend listening to Jazz music while you ready this book because it makes it even more enjoyable, it just gets you into the mood, unless you don't like that kind of music, but then I'm not sure if this is your kind of book because New Orleans is all about Jazz.
I might be wrong but there's one of the storylines that's not completely closed, but maybe I just misread it somehow, I'll find out if I ever have time to re-read this book.
Jazz para el asesino del hacha es el primer libro de Ray Celestin, se basa en los crímenes que ocurrieron en Nueva Orleans durante los años 1918-1919.
Si no sabéis nada sobre el Asesino del hacha no os preocupéis, no es necesario saber nada al respecto porque el libro utiliza básicamente la premisa de los delitos para crear una historia ficticia alrededor de ella.
La historia se centra en tres/cuatro personajes principales, un detective de la policía de Nueva Orleans (Det. Teniente Michael Talbot), un ex detective recién salido de prisión (Luca D'Andrea) y una chica que trabaja para una agencia de detectives (Ida Davis ) con la ayuda de su mejor amigo (Lewis Armstrong, sí, ese Lewis Armstrong).
Los tres personajes principales tratan; por sus propios medios y por sus propias razones; de resolver los crímenes del Axeman. Sus historias se entrelazan solamente un par de veces, algunas de ellas meras anécdotas, pero a través de las tres conseguimos entender la complicada trama que hay detrás de los crímenes.
Recomiendo escuchar música Jazz mientras lees el libro, ya que lo hace aún más agradable, te sumerge en el ambiente, a menos que no te gusta ese tipo de música, pero si es así quizás este no sea tú tipo de libro porque Nueva Orleans es todo Jazz.
Quizás me quivoque, pero hay una de las historias que no está completamente cerrado, pero a lo mejor lo he leído mal, si alguna vez tengo tiempo para volver a leerme este libro puede que lo descubra.
What I like about this book:
The book's plots get's place in New Orleans, I've always found that city to be bright and full of life and music. I'm pretty sure the early New Orleans was very different from the present one but the essence of it still remains there and I think it has some kind of magic that makes me like it.
I'm always scared with crimes novels to be able to tell the whole plot at the beginning of the book, I hate that, and I'm really glad that didn't happen in this book. It gives enough to make you make some small guesses and play detective but not too much as to reveal the complete plot of the book until the last chapters.
It has mysteries, action and what I love the most, almost no romance! As I always say, if I want to read about love I would read a romantic novel, I just want a realistic kind of love when I'm reading any other kind of book, I don't care who's in love with who or who's having sex with who unless it's important for the book. In this case the book just talks about at most three relationships and never to the extent of making them sappy, one of them is anecdotical but the other two, specially one, are important.
The ending, no spoilers, I'm not talking about how the crimes were solved (I liked that too, very IRL) but about how when everything's finished there's like a small wink to another huge historical event. I won't say anymore, if you want to know about it you must read the book.
When I was reading it I thought it was an amazing ending for a new start, meaning, new book, and I just found out that there's a new book (Dead man's blues) that was released at the beginning of August and I'm definitely going to buy it as soon as it's available here.
Lo que me gusta de este libro:
La trama del libro ocurre en Nueva Orleans, siempre he pensado que esa ciudad está llena de luz, vida y música. Estoy bastante segura de que la Nueva Orleans del pasado era muy diferente de la actual, pero la esencia todavía permanece allí y creo que tiene un aire mágico que hace que me guste.
Siempre tengo miedo con este tipo de novelas, porque muchas veces puedes saber toda la trama facilmente al principio del libro, eso no me gusta, y estoy muy contenta de que no fuese así en este libro. Se da suficienteinformación para que hagas algunas conjeturas y juegues a ser undetective, pero no demasiada como para revelar la trama completa del libro hasta que no llegas a los últimos capítulos.
Tiene misterios, acción y lo que más me gusta, casi no hay romance. Como siempre digo, si quiero leer sobre amor, leería una novela romántica, cuando estoy leyendo cualquier otro tipo de libro sólo quiero un amor realista, no me importa quién está enamorado de quién o quién se acuesta con quién a menos que sea importante para el libro. En este caso, el libro solo habla de, como máximo, tres relaciones y nunca hasta el punto de hacer que sean noñas, una de ellas es anecdótica para el libro, pero las otras dos, especialmente una, son importantes.
El final, sin spoilers, no estoy hablando acerca de cómo se resuelven los crímenes ( también me gusto, muy IRL), sino de cómo, cuando todo está terminado hay como un pequeño guiño a otro gran evento histórico. No voy a decir nada más, si queréis saber de que hablo tenéis que leer el libro.
Cuando estaba leyéndolo pensé que era un final genial para un nuevo comienzo, es decir, para un nuevo libro, y me acabo de enterar de que de hecho hay un nuevo libro (Dead man's blues, no sé si está en español) que fue lanzado a principios de agosto y definitivamente me lo voy a comprar tan pronto como esté disponible aquí.
What I dislike about this book:
I got a bit lost almost by the end of the book with all the names, that might be just my problem but too many people died and there was a point where I had to check back because I had no idea if the guy that died was the one I thought, but I'm horrible with names, maybe not the book's fault.
As I already said, not sure if I misread something or if there's one storyline that's not completely closed. Pretty sure it's the last and I would like to know what happened to that character but I'll get over it.

Me perdí un poco casi cerca del final del libro con todos los nombres, podría ser problema mío, pero mueren muchas personas y hubo un punto en el que tuve que comprobar algún nombre de nuevo porque no tenía ni idea de si el chico que murió era el que yo pensaba, pero soy horrible con los nombres así que quizás no sea culpa del libro.
Como ya he dicho, no estoy segura de si leí mal algo o si hay una historia que no está completamente cerrada. Estoy bastante segura de que es lo segundo y me gustaría saber qué pasó con ese personaje, pero lo superaré.
To summarize it. I loved the book, not a surprise because I love crime novels, pulp fiction and similar. It's well written and that's always important, I read the english version (I'm Spanish) and it took me just a couple of days so it's very easy to read and once you start it you want to keep reading until the end.
I strongly recommend it if you like crime and mystery novels. If you like history from the early 20th century, that's a plus.
En resumen. Me encantó el libro, no es una sorpresa porque me encanta la novela negra, pulp fiction y similares. Está bien escrito lo cual es siempre importante, yo leí la versión en Inglés (soy española) y tardé sólo un par de días, así que es muy fácil de leer y una vez que empiezas quieres seguir leyendo hasta el final.
Lo recomiendo si te gustan las novelas de crimen y misterio. Si aparte te gusta la historia de principios del siglo 20, más puntos a favor.
